Regular school attendance is important for students to achieve their educational potential. Regular attendance is defined as being at school 90% of the time or more. Attendance rates of 70% or less are to be considered Chronic Absence and referral action will be taken. As a school we are obligated to take steps to have our students at school regularly.
Parent Responsibilities:
ensure students attend every day they are able
reinforce good attendance habits
open communication with the school
follow the school’s attendance management plan and associated attendance policies and procedures.
School Responsibilities:
clear communication to parents and students on attendance expectations on enrolment, at the start of the year and each term
communicate to parents what steps the school will take if the student is absent from school
monitor student attendance
report regularly to parents on attendance of their child (this can be viewed on Hero)
If students have 5-9 days absent each term (non-consecutive) we will call or send an email to parents to discuss reasons for absence and impact on learning.
Subsequent absences will require further contact with parents (email and/or phone call as required) to set a meeting between school, parents and student to analyse reasons for absence. At the meeting we’ll develop a support plan tailored to the reasons and circumstances around your child’s absence.
If a student's absence reaches 15 days, it will likely cause the school to request support from Attendance Services or other agencies as needed.
Justified absences, such as medical appointments and sickness are still absences! We remind you to aim at having your child's attendance rate at 90% or better.
“We expect our kids to be here, and we want them to want to be here. It’s as simple as that.”
